Update to English General Paper Resources

While I am working on making the guides, I have posted a separate doc on "Some Things to Know for English General Paper 2" covering doubts which I personally made a note of, before my exams.

The resource megathread doc and the cheat sheet for GP have been updated as well with this new resource. Have a happy reading y'all.

Quick Update

Recently I was quite engaged in another event. I'll be turning over my attention back to the site again. The plan right now is to make a guide for EGP Paper 2 alongside some other content for Computer Science. Slowly but surely, resources for other subjects like Mathematics will follow.

The site may go down/change sometimes as I am working to make it more stable and secure, namely for mobile users. Do download the relevant PDFs, just in case.

Thank you to those who have given me feedback and/or continue to use the site.

CS 9618 Resource Megathread

I have compiled a resource megathread for CS which brings together many, many useful links in one spot.

While you are free to use this like it is, expect a post/couple of posts on the Computer Science 9618 section of the blog which explains how to make the best possible use of these resources soon. Not all resources are created equal. Some are simply better than others. The sooner you know which ones to use in what manner, the closer you are to getting a good grade in CS 9618.

GUIDE ON HOW TO PREPARE FOR CS 9618 IS IN THE WORKS

On Singaporean GP Resources

If you did your research before coming to this site, you may have found out that there are some websites (and youtube channels) offering help with GP.

The catch is that you may not have noticed the ".sg" domain on these websites. From what I know, Singapore has its own A Level board, in collaboration with Cambridge International Education, curated to their specific needs. Meaning that it is tougher than the CIE A Level boards that we follow.

What does this exactly mean and should you be using them?

The Papers + Syllabus

English General Paper 8021 is an AS Level course meaning you typically only study it for one year. This means that you won't be able to get an A* in this subject and will only get half-credit if the university your applying to, accepts A Level credit. However, you give the GP exam after your second year in certain colleges/high schools like SXC. Mostly, you'd just give it at the end of your first year and be done with it.

It is divided into two components. Paper 1 and 2 respectively.

Paper 1 is an essay paper. It is of 30 marks and lasts for 1 hour 15 minutes. It occupies 50% of the weightage in the total score. There will be 10 topics and

How to Prepare for Paper 1 (Essay)

Go through this first!!!! -> 7 MAJOR AREAS OF INTEREST FOR GP

The strategy here is to find your strong area and specialise in it while also having backup topics to fall on. A grasp over three areas at a minimum will be needed for Paper 1. Questions on politics, science, individuals and arts are the most common but you can never be sure. You don't want to keep focusing on a single topic on all of your term exams only for it to not even be asked in the actual paper. Even worse would be if the only question from the topic you specialized in is something that you have no idea about.

Why English General Paper?

Ahh English General Paper. It is easy to dismiss this subject in favour of other more "full" subjects. Even I am guilty of this.

Yet it has the power to quite possibly make or break not only your result but you yourself as well. Many have enjoyed A and A* in their results only for General Paper to hit them in the face with a C or D. So what? surely it's only an AS Level subject (half credit). Surely universities won't pay it much heed when you have a juicy stack of all-stars in other subjects.
